Lincolnshire is mainly a rural county, with a flat landscape that drains the land into the Wash at Holbeach Marsh. The Lincolnshire Wolds run down the eastern side of the county from Grimsby to Skegness. Wolds Top is the highest point in the Lincolnshire Wolds at approximately 550 feet (168 metres). The main rivers are the Humber in the north, the Trent and the Welland in the south. The county contains very few areas of population except around the Humber estuary. The main centres of population include Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Lincoln, Spalding, Holbeach, Boston, Stamford and Grantham. Lincolnshire was formed from the former Saxon Kingdom of Lindsey to the north and the Danelaw borough of Stamford to the south. Scunthorpe and Grimsby and Cleethorpes are all in the unitary Authorities of North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

In Lincolnshire the main routes all radiate from Lincoln and Boston. Stamford is linked via Spalding to Boston by the A16. The A1 runs up the west side from Stamford to Grantham which is connected to Boston via the A52. Lincoln is linked to Grimsby and Cleethorpes by the A46. The A158 from Lincoln to Skegness skirts to the south of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
